Autosemite, 2026
Autosemite examines antisemitism: how it spreads like a virus, and how it changes the perception of those it affects.
Autosémitisme is one of its mutations. The word appeared in 2019 on far-right websites. It names an antisemitic conspiracy theory: that attacks on Jews are staged by Jews themselves. It differs from antisémitisme by two letters. That is enough to turn a real attack into a staged one, and the victim into the culprit. In March 2026, the day after an explosion targeted the synagogue in Liège, the word resurfaced in the comments beneath a post by Belgian public radio.
The material has been shot on film in Berlin and across Europe since 2023, in places antisemitism has marked and in places it has not yet reached. Antisemitic comments gathered online are turned into a computational virus. The virus is then injected into the material. It hijacks the cells it infects, which proliferate like cancer cells and corrupt the images.
