The Sun Casts No Shadow, photographs, 2014

The Sun Casts No Shadow is a series of photographs put together in 2014 from an archive gathered over several years. Most were taken on film with a small camera, often at night.

The series does not separate the human from the animal, or the living from what is made. It explores the limit at which everything can tip over, where every existence, human or not, meets its own finitude.

A man with a moustache looks up toward a light outside the frame.
A floodlit castle at night, the only block of light in a black frame.
A cat's eyes shine in a slit of darkness.
The edge of a forest, tall grass bleached by the light.
A snake coiled among leaves.
A blurred, grainy face, the eyes like two holes.
Dense smoke over a silhouetted crowd at night.
A naked body suspended in a metal hoop above spectators.
A man blows into a barbecue; the flames and smoke engulf his head.
Two girls seen from below, in front of steps and a door.
A columned portico, stone steps and a closed wooden door.
Foliage lit in the middle of the dark.
A man against a brick wall holds a banknote, a hand reaching into the frame.
A misted windscreen, a wiper at the bottom of the frame.
At night on a beach, a woman holds out her knickers toward the camera; a naked man is seen from behind.
Two people embracing, blurred by movement.
Close view of a sculpture: bodies entangled beneath the legs of a creature.
An old woman looks on from a distance at the foot of a hedge, almost carried off by the dark.
A man in a leather jacket emerges from the dark.
Lit buildings behind trees, which seem to be on fire.
A little girl in the dark, a string of beads over her jumper.
A stone bust at night, surrounded by lilies and hydrangeas.
Portrait of a young woman smiling in a street, the image torn at the side.
A child's face in a band of light, a dark shape in the foreground.
An old painted portrait of a man in a ruff, his face emerging from the dark.
A crumpled white sheet on a bed, two small dark objects lying on it.
Faces in the dark, seen in profile.
A garden at night, brick façades behind the foliage.
A wolfdog behind a railing, in the dark: only its eyes and muzzle catch the light.
